How to choose a PSARA-licensed security agency in Chennai: a 7-point checklist
Hiring security guards for an office, factory or residential site in Chennai? Use this checklist to confirm the agency is PSARA licensed, its guards are verified and trained, and your contract protects you.

Whether you run an IT office on OMR, a warehouse on the outskirts of Chennai or a residential community in Chengalpattu district, the security agency you hire is responsible for your people and property around the clock. A low quote means little if guards do not turn up, have not been verified, or the agency is not licensed to operate.
Here are seven things to check before you sign with a security agency in Chennai.
1. Ask for the agency’s PSARA licence
Private security agencies in India are regulated by the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005, usually called PSARA. An agency needs a licence from the Controlling Authority of each state it works in. In Tamil Nadu the Act is applied through the Tamil Nadu Private Security Agencies Rules, 2008. A licence is valid for five years and must then be renewed.
- Ask for a copy of the licence and check that it covers Tamil Nadu.
- Check the licence number, the registered name and the validity dates.
- Make sure the name on the licence matches the company you are signing the contract with.
2. Confirm guards are verified before deployment
PSARA requires agencies to verify the character and antecedents of the guards they employ, and guards must be at least 18 and below 65 years old. Ask how verification is done and whether you can see the records for the guards posted at your site.
3. Ask what training guards receive
The Act also requires guards to complete prescribed security training. Ask what it covers, such as access control, patrolling, fire safety, first aid and emergency response, and whether guards get a site-specific induction before their first shift at your premises.
4. Check wage and statutory compliance
Guards are the agency’s employees, but as the principal employer you have a direct interest in them being paid correctly and on time. Under contract labour rules, a principal employer can be held responsible if a contractor fails to pay wages. Ask for:
- Confirmation that guards are paid at least the applicable minimum wage
- The agency’s PF and ESI registration numbers
- Monthly proof of wage payment and PF and ESI remittances
5. Understand supervision and reporting
Ask who supervises the guards on your site, how often a field officer visits, how attendance is recorded and what daily or incident reports you will receive. Good supervision is what keeps standards steady after the first month.
6. Agree replacement and leave cover
Guards fall sick and take leave. Ask how quickly a replacement is posted and whether relievers are part of the deployment plan, so a post is never left empty.
7. Read the contract line by line
- Scope: number of posts, shifts and guards per shift
- Uniforms and equipment, and who supplies them
- Rates, and exactly what they include
- Notice period and how disputes are handled
- Named contacts for day-to-day issues and escalation
